6 months on the coil

Hello lovelies,

I've been on the Mirena coil for almost 6 months now and I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You can read my post about having the coil fitted here. My periods pre-coil were horrific, and even though I was taking Tranexamic acid (to reduce blood flow) and Mefenamic acid (an anti inflammatory painkiller) I would still get through a couple of boxes of additional painkillers each period, as well as 2-3 packs of max flow night time pads. I could spend up to 3 days of every 5 day period in bed as the pain was so horrific, and the bleeding was intense. I couldn't wait for menopause.

The first 4 months of being on the coil was HORRIBLE, I'm not going to lie. I was bleeding for 10-11 days out of every 21. Yes, really! The blood flow and pain were reduced from the very first period and I never needed to use Tranexamic acid and Mefenamic acid again, but being on my period so long and with such a short time in between was really annoying. I must've had about 8 periods in these 6 months, but they only started getting better from my second to last period. That time I had a 24 day cycle, and I only bled for 5 days. This was also the first month I didn't bleed through my underwear onto the bedding in the night. My last period (last week) was 5 days long and I had a 27 day cycle, so things are getting really good now. My last period was great - the flow was so light that I'm hoping in another 6 months I may not be having periods at all.

Have you got the coil? Are you thinking about having it fitted? I really wish I'd had it done years ago, even with the initial teething problems.

Thanks for reading. Leah xoxo

  1. I have the Mirena fitted in June 2017, after suffering really bad periods and my doctors recommending it for ages and me declining. Like you, I was popping mefanamic and tranexamic acid monthly and my periods were 7 days long, heavy and painful. The pills were expensive and eventually I took the doctors advice and made an appointment to talk to the nurse about the Mirena. My Mum had it for years and swore by it and told me it would be worth it, so after a chat and some research, I decided to go for it.

I’ve gotta be honest, it was pretty awful at first. Insertion was quite uncomfortable and my body didn’t feel like my own for quite a while, I bled a lot and felt like it was having the opposite effect on my body, but I persevered and I can happily say that after maybe 8/9 months the change was massive, periods were much lighter and manageable for me. Now, 16 months on, I don’t even think about it. I have the odd period that can be painful and heavier than I’m used to (with the coil - but nothing in comparison to before), but some months I’ll have a tiny bit of spottting and nothing else. I do however still get the symptoms of a period sometimes, and still suffer with PMT. but I have absolutely no regrets about having it fitted, it’s the best thing ever and has hugely improved my periods.

    1. I'm glad things are better for you too! It seems a common theme for things to get worse before they get better, and I'm hoping my periods will get even lighter still. People had been recommending me to get the coil for at least 2 years before I did, but I let a few horror stories put me off. Even when I did my first post, there were a huge amounts of women on my Facebook page saying it hadn't worked for them and it had been terrible. I'm thankful to be one of the ones it has helped. If not for the coil I'd still be wolfing those bloody huge tablets and curling up with a hot water bottle AND a wheat bag trying to kill the pain.

  2. Yep, I totally feel you on that! I was put off by stories too, and thought buying pills and pads by the truck load every month was just my fate. I too am glad I gave it a go, no regrets at all (touch wood!). Your periods will all but stop like mine, I’m sure. As I said, they’re very rare now, and if anything it’s only enough for a thing panty liner or two. Last month was quite a bad one in comparison to usual, but this month, barely anything at all! 🙂

    1. That's so good to hear! I really hope mine do disappear. I've been bleeding for 31 years now (I'm old, haha) and that's quite enough for me! I can deal with a panty liner's worth. :)
