Hi loves,

Something I'm really keen on getting out there is Ms Pomelo's post mastectomy bras for breast cancer warriors. I know three people who went through breast cancer last year and who are still experiencing it. One of those friends Tracie has been kind enough to supply me with a bunch of images of her in her post-surgery bras, including some stunning pin up images of her by Alt Studio Manchester.

Email care@mspomelo.com and they will send you a catalogue of post-surgery bras. Here's some more photos of Tracie in her bras. You can follow Tracie's journey on Instagram. Also sign up to the monthly text reminders to check your boobs at Coppafeel. I signed up because of Tracie, and I get a reminder once a month. Now it's on my mind I do it every month after my period, and the text reminder is a back up in case I forget.

As you can see in the photos the bras are gorgeous - both functional and sexy. They range in price from just £30-35, which is phenomenal. A person who's been through a mastectomy deserves to feel sexy as any one of us.
This is a wonderful service provided by Ms Pomelo and here are their tips for choosing a post-surgery bra.

  • Choose fabric that is soft and breathable. Pockets to be made from hypoallergenic material, such as cotton. Pay attention that seams are flat to provide gentle contact with the skin.
  • Non-underwired cups is default choice for post-surgery bras. In the recent years manufacturers began using wires with 10-20% rigidity of the regular wire, to help give shape to the bra. Check with your breast nurse if you can wear a wired bra.
  • T-cup bra structure resembles the natural shape of the breast and will fit equally well small and larger cups.
  • Deep front- and side-panels will help conceal surgery scars. Wings at the underarm should be tall enough to manage the extra bits of skin that may remain after the operation.
  • Wide elastic at the bottom at the band helps stabilise the fit, which is important for fuller figures/cups
  • Prostheses are meant to be a proxy to the natural breast, however they can be quite heavy (heavier than the natural breast!). Choose a bra that has all typical features of support for fuller cups: taller centre panel, wider foam cushioned straps, leotard strap join, and wings made out of solid material such as power mesh.
  • Test-drive you bra by wearing a top over it to check if you are happy with the appearance – are cup seams showing?
  • I would recommend that the prosthesis & bra fitting is done with a professional, at least during the initial stages. Hospitals typically provide the fitting service through the prosthesis suppliers, however the experience is inconsistent and offers limited product selection. We see the emergence of newly formed fittings services that offer excellent customer experience and carry a wide range of makes in extensive sizes – we teamed up with Julie Blanche of The Bra Consultancy who runs bra-fitting clinics and does home visits. https://www.thebraconsultancy.com/bra-clinics.

Find Ms Pomelo here, and if you know anyone who's had a full or partial mastectomy, put them in touch so they can feel great in their underwear again.

Thanks for reading. Leah xoxo

*I have not been paid for this article - I want post-surgery warriors to be able to find pretty and comfortable bras.

    1. Me too! I know if I'd had cancer and surgery one of the first things I'd be gagging to do when I was all healed up would be get a comfy bra that looks good, put some prostheses in and strut my stuff. It's a very small thing that goes a long way for people who've been through hell. I'm very passionate about this.

  2. Awww this made me so happy and it's such an important post. For so many women there are far too few options and that these are on the market is worth knowing. I've also just signed up for the text reminders for the CoppaFeel boob check, so thanks for the heads up on that. :)

    1. Great news that you signed up to the text reminders! I think every bra manufacturer should offer mastectomy options, but I'm very glad Ms Pomelo is picking up their slack.
