Beauty | My hair care routine

Hello love bugs!

I've been asked a couple of times how I keep my long hair in good condition and here's what I use on my hair to wash, style and maintain good hair and scalp health.

I wash my hair every 2-3 days (more often in summer) and I'm still reverse shampooing - using conditioner first and shampoo afterwards. It gives my hair far more body than traditional washing.

I'm not fussy about what shampoo & conditioner I use. I choose products which aren't tested on animals, that don't bring me out in an allergic reaction and don't upset my scalp. I've used everything from expensive shampoos to Tesco cheap ones with little difference to the condition of my hair. Diet changes seem to make more of a difference to the condition of my hair, rather than what I put on it. More on that later in the post. My current shampoo/conditioner are from Tesco, and are their version of Herbal Essences. Since I've had Fibromyalgia and CFS/ME I've been chemically sensitive and my scalp is super dry and can weep and scab if I use products which don't agree with it. I've been using this shampoo/conditioner for about a year without issue but recently I had an allergic reaction to it. When this happens my whole face itches terribly, I start to wheeze, cough and squeak when I talk, and I have to take an antihistamine ASAP before my glands shoot up and I feel like death. I was able to start using it again a few days later, thankfully.

If my hair or scalp are feeling in need of some TLC I'll use the Old Wives Tail hair oil or plain coconut oil. I use organic because I like being able to use it for hair and body OR using it as a food. Old Wives Tail appear to have gone out of business as their website is down and their Facebook page is no longer updated. It's a shame as the oil is brilliant. When I wash out the oil I put shampoo on my head before I wet it, because of oil and water not mixing. I have to use lots of shampoo to cover my whole head before I add water, but it does rinse out better that way. Because my scalp is so parched I have to use a lot of oil, and that sometimes means my fine hair is overloaded and looks lank until I've washed it a couple of times. It's worth it though.

I use Dr Organic argan oil serum on my hair to keep it in lovely condition. It smells absolutely delicious, is cruelty free and keeps my wavy hair from being frizzy. When I'm getting near to hair cut time again my ends can look rather ratty and it smoothes them out and stops them tangling. I can put it on wet or dry and it doesn't make my hair look greasy.

My friend Rachel bought me a Tigi Party Girl hair styling kit a while before Christmas and it's really good. The hairspray smells fruity, not like the usual horrible choking hairspray scent. It doesn't make your hair crispy and leaves a lovely shine. The styling cream is good for taming loose strands and I use it to smooth any tangles I get on the day after washing when I wake up with bed head. I also have two chunks of hair that grow behind each ear that are super curly and much more prone to tangling and splitting so the cream helps deal with that frizz. The shine spray is useful to fake a bit of gloss when my hair looks dull. I use it most often if I've dry shampooed my hair and it looks flat and lifeless.

I have my hair cut every 3 months by an ex-Toni and Guy stylist and usually trim my fringe myself every month or so as it grows like wildfire. I also have quite a lot of healthy oils in my diet - olive oil, coconut oil, rapeseed oil etc. I know there's a lot of talk about oils being bad for you, but having oil in your diet is brilliant for your hair and skin in my experience. A little olive oil on some salad, some coconut oil to sweeten your tea or some rapeseed oil in a smoothie all work. Seeds and chopped nuts sprinkled on a side salad is another good way to get that healthy stuff in and help the condition of your hair and skin.

What do you use on your hair?

Thanks for reading.

Hair cut photos

Hello sweet peas!

I got my hair cut on Saturday and here are some photos of my hair and make up. As usual I had an asymmetric fringe cut in and I'm growing out most of my undercut. (It's about collar length now, I just have one short bit on my right side by my ear.) I'm growing it and it's reasonably healthy at the moment so I just had a trim.

I'm wearing ELF coffee liquid eyeliner on my brows and eyes and Sociable by ELF on my lips.

My hair has been scrunched and curled to within an inch of its life.

I'm holding a strand to show how long it is uncurled.

I started off the day with my makeup like this (below) but I washed most of it off when I washed my hair at my hairdressers - her shower hose is a bit of a fighter - so I redid it as in the photos above. I'm wearing a purple matte eyeshadow from a Stila palette I bought a couple of years ago.

I don't do 2 make up looks in a day very often, so I thought I'd share. They're both simple and relaxed for that weekend vibe. I'm pleased my hair is halfway down my back now. It's taken a long time to grow it.

What's the longest you've ever had your hair?

Twice when I was little I had hair down to my waist, then had it all cut off. Now my hair is greying fast, a lot of my hair is coarser than it was, which makes it thicker, especially combined with reverse shampooing which I've been doing for just over a year now. It really works to increase body. Another weird thing about going grey is for every grey hair I find I seem to find a very thick, wiry black hair, which is most odd as my natural colour is auburn and my hair is usually fine. I'm going to have some funky looking hair in a few years time - part grey, black and reddish brown. At least life won't be boring. ;)

Thanks for peeking!

Reverse shampooing update

Hiya!

I wrote a post about 6 weeks ago about reverse shampooing - where you condition your hair first and shampoo after - and I wanted to do an update.

I'm still doing it. I still get 3 days in between washes (before reverse shampooing I was having to shampoo every 2 days) and still find my hair feels thicker. I think in the before (left) and after (right) photos below you can see a little more oomph in my hair.

What do you think? Does it look thicker to you?

It feels thicker and washing my hair 2-3 times a week instead of 3-4 is a difference I like, so I'll keep at it. I know a few other people have given it a try and liked the results for themselves, so holler in the comments if it's working for you.

Have you tried reverse shampooing yet?

Thanks for reading, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Love EVERY Body #2 - From the neck up

Hello lovelies!

I've decided to post a day early in case anyone who's struggling for things to say can have a read of my post before they write their own. The rest of the posts are due Sunday.
It's part 2 of this challenge and today's post is about everything north of the neck and all it encompasses - face shape, facial features, voice, freckles, dimples, teeth, hair, and also our brains, the things that make us US.

I don't know if people told me I was pretty when I was young, but I've always felt pretty. If I think about my facial characteristics I *could* choose to look at the negatives and make my opinion from that, but I don't.
I have a nose which is long and quite witchy in profile, and it has a lump near the bridge of my nose from a childhood break. I'm nearly 40, so there are eye bags coming, but I choose not to focus on it because being miserable (making myself miserable) is no fun. I have a few chipped teeth from an ex partner smacking me in the gob, and the rest of them are a bit wonky as my childhood dentist couldn't be arsed to put a brace on, but oh well. What are wonky teeth or a lumpy nose compared to a good heart? (Or a heart trying to be good.) Nothing!

My face, I like that shit, even with a lumpy nose.
So, things I like:

  • my hair, even though it's going grey at an alarming rate and I can't dye it funky colours any more (allergies!)
  • my freckles, which are dead cute and multiply madly in summer
  • my smile, even though I have wonky teeth - everyone looks better with a smile!
  • my brain, because it makes me ME in a zillion different ways and that's to be celebrated
  • my laugh, which is as filthy as!
  • my eyes, which are a lovely hazel with flecks of gold
  • my eyelashes, which are long (but stubbornly straight!)
  • my eyebrows, because I've spent approximately 3 months of my life tending to them
  • my cheekbones, which are somewhat buried under squidge but are there
  • my ears, for hearing music and lovely words from my family and friends
  • my eyes to see all the beauty in this world
  • my mouth for talking, kissing and eating
  • my nose to smell lovely things like my husband's neck when I nuzzle him or some lovely perfume, or food cooking
  • my labret piercing
Things I'm working on liking:
  • my double chins - love them on other people, not so keen on them on me, but they feel so soft so I'm learning to love them
  • my wonk nose
  • my wonk teeth
  • my eye bags
  • my lips, which are quite thin unless I trout pout (which is why I often do pout!)
No one is perfect and it's clear there are far more things I like about myself than dislike, so that's what I think about. I've picked the things I like about myself out of thin air with no real thought at all, so I'm sure there are loads more things I could add to the list with a bit more thought.

I hope when I read your posts you like a lot of things about yourself too, but if you can't, I know the wonderful little community we're building will help you see the wonderful things there are about you.

Thanks for reading.

Stop! Henna time

Howdy doodly!

I refreshed the henna on my hair a couple of days ago and thought I'd post some photos of my hair and face. For new readers, I'm allergic to actual dye so I use henna instead and have been doing so for about 4 years now.

The henna really conditions my hair and makes it feel softer and thicker. I miss having bright streaks and different coloured hair. For anyone who's interested you can see a variety of my past hairstyles here.

I'm wearing a matte brown eyeshadow called Fantasy from the MUA Smokin palette, which I swatched here.

The redder bits of hair you see are my greys being covered. Some of my hair is black and some of it is red - you can see it best in the middle photo. I finished off two colours of henna to do my hair this time. I don't mind having piebald hair - it'll soon wash out anyway! It'll last for about 6 weeks, depending on how often I wash my hair. When my greys start to peek through again it's time to start again.

I use Surya henna cream, which is cruelty free. I have no patience for henna powder. I need something I can whack on straight away then forget about because Fibromyalgia makes my arms T-Rex useless and dyeing/washing my hair kills my arms.

I'm getting a friend to trim my undercut this weekend. It's about 2 inches long now and is starting to stick out at crazy angles. I'll probably post photos next week.

Thanks for peeping!

Retrospective of hair and make up

Hi :)

So....I remembered Photobucket existed yesterday.

I used it virtually every day when I was posting pictures on MySpace, but since I stopped visiting that lame duck I'd forgotten all about it. It was only last night when I was looking for a photo of Jason Momoa (my all-time man crush) that I saw a link to Photobucket on Google and thought I'd have a look to see what I'd uploaded there. I last used it about 2 years ago.

There were a load of my photography pics as well as a bunch of hair and makeup ones over the last 4 years or so, which are very interesting, as I am reminded of all the changes I've been through. Here are a selection...you'll see 3 different pairs of glasses and no end of hair colours and styles.

And there we are.

It's interesting to look back and see how I've aged in the last few years.

Have you ever looked back to see how you've changed over the last few years? I'd love to see your photos!

Oops, moar hair pics!

Hiya dolls,

I was meant to post these with my outfit post just now.

My hair makes me giggle in these photos as it's 'wahey party' on one side and old lady bouffant on the other! (Especially in the middle photo!)

Thanks for peeking.

April hair cut

 Hello!

I had a hair cut today. It was well overdue.

Since I lost the baby I've been fiddling with my hair almost non-stop and my ends were in a bad way. I've messed with my hair (and scalp) when I'm stressed since I was a small child, and I'm quite ruthless about getting the damage sorted afterwards. Although I'm growing my hair as long as I can before my wedding, I want it to be in beautiful condition so I had about 3 or 4 inches off today.

I'm not too keen on the fringe, but it'll soon grow and I'm notorious for disliking my hair when it's first cut and loving it a few days later. The fella reckons it makes me look cute, so I call it a win!

What do you think?
