My top 5 rides to visit at Universal Studios Orlando*

Hi loveys,

This is a collaborative post (written by me).

[By NBCUniversal - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, Link]

Are you a rollercoaster fan? I haven't been on a rollercoaster in years but I grew up going to Dreamland in Margate and regularly got my thrills there as a teen on the American Looping Star and the Scenic Railway. I'd love to visit Universal Studios in Orlando. Opened in 1990 and co-founded by Steven Spielberg it's one of the top theme park destinations in the world.

Here are the 5 rides at Universal I'd most love to go on. Some of them are rollercoasters and some of them are virtual reality simulations. There are a couple of really family friendly rides in my picks as I'm basically a 5 year old in a 45 year old's body!

HARRY POTTER AND THE FORBIDDEN JOURNEY

I'm a massive Harry Potter fan (and proud Slytherin) so this ride is right at the top of my list. Harry Potter is great escapism from reality and what better way to do that than by flying over Hogwarts?

THE SIMPSONS RIDE

When I was with James we used to watch The Simpsons almost every day of the week. I'm a huge fan of the dysfunctional yellow family so this virtual reality coaster ride would be a beeline for me. It's good family-friendly fun.

DESPICABLE ME MINION MAYHEM

I don't know what it is about me and cute yellow critters, but I also love Minions. They're cute and silly and they love ba-na-nas, so what's not to like?! This ride is pure escapism and very family friendly, featuring a dance off at the end of the show.

THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF SPIDERMAN

This is another virtual reality ride rather than an actual rollercoaster. Watch Spiderman save the day as he soars over New York. Just make sure you don't lose your lunch when he drops 400 feet!

REVENGE OF THE MUMMY

This indoor rollercoaster takes you on a dark and scary ride complete with fire and insects as the Mummy Imhotep tries to steal your very soul! This ride looks really scary and would be sure to get your heart pounding.

Have you been to Universal Studios Orlando? If so, what was your favourite ride?

What To Wear To Visit Disney World*

Hello lovelies,

I remember as a child and teenager being jealous of my peers whose parents were taking them on a family holiday to Disney World. I grew up seeing Disney World adverts on tv and it always looked so magical. As a small child I had a black hat with mouse ears on which I wore until it fell to pieces. I even used to wear it to church. Even as an adult it's still on my bucket list to go to Disney World one day, and here's what kind of thing I'd be wearing for the trip.

Comfy shoes

Comfy shoes have got to be at the top of the list as there's a LOT of walking to be done - there's the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Centre, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, as well as the water parks and more! Skechers are my go to comfortable shoes and I have a few pairs - their memory foam insoles really are like walking on air, perfect for a long day on your feet. These slip ons with fastenings offer great support, and you can machine wash them as well at the end of a trip to freshen them up. Just don't tumble dry them or they'll shrink. They are an expensive outlay but your feet will really thank you for it, trust me.

Minnie Ears

You can't go to Disney World without wearing Minnie ears, it's absolutely got to be done! These sequinned ones are a great price and would keep your hair off your face on a hot Florida day. I think I'd go for the ones on the left as the more colour the better for me!

Polka Dots

To me, Disney screams Minnie Mouse polka dots so I'd have to wear something polka dot print. This plus size Lyra dress by Lady Voluptuous is stylish and comfortable, and as it's made of stretch jersey it'll be great for those humid Florida days.

A photo diary of my holiday

Hello pickles, I haven't really shared any photos of my holiday last month (except for on Instagram) so here are some highlights.

5 places in Europe I long to visit* (sp)

Hiya!

I've really got back into Pinterest lately, and although I blog about fashion and beauty, the things I tend to pin the most are scenery photos. I spent a couple of hours the other evening researching travel to Venice after I found a glorious photo on Pinterest, and I found myself sucked into a vortex of 'What to pack' and 'What to see when you're in Venice' type posts....even though I don't know if I'll ever get there. But isn't that half the fun?!

A lot of the photos I pin are from European destinations, so here are 5 places I'd love to visit in Europe, with some accompanying photos. (If viewing via email click through to blog to see the photos embedded from Pinterest).

1. Venice. It's the romance of the place; the idea that anyone would imagine driving millions of wooden piles into the marshy ground and building on top of it. I'm a big fan of 'go big or go home' ethos and I think Venice is the ultimate example of this ballsy attitude. I love the way they're at the mercy of the sea, but go with the flow (literally!) and deal with the regular aqua alta (high tides) with stoicism. I absolutely adore art, history and architecture and I'm pretty sure that if I do ever make it to Venice, I'll probably spend the first day jumping for joy, and the rest of the time buying more SD cards for the 24 zillion photos I'd take.

2. Rome. Again I would love to visit for the architecture, art and history although I'm pretty sure gelato would figure in somewhere. The Vatican museum, the Colosseum, The Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain would all be on my must-visit list. I'd need a lot of SD cards for that trip, too! I love ancient buildings, ornately carved stone and embellishment for the sake of it, so I know I'd be spoiled for choice in Rome.

3. Paris. Things I'd love to see are the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and a little detour to the Palace of Versailles. Some crepes might have to be on my list too. Ooh la la!

4. Santorini, Greece. I've only been to Greece once, to Corfu, and I had a lovely 2 weeks exploring the length and breadth of the island. The Greek people are so warm, and the scenery of Santorini takes my breath away. Whitewashed cottages built into the hills, touches of blue on the buildings nearly as deep blue as the sea and sky. Magical!

5. Cinque Terre, Italy. It literally means '5 towns' and is a collection of gorgeous fishing villages with some of the most stunning scenery I've ever seen. I think the photo speaks for itself about why I want to visit. Those colours!

Writing this post has lit a fire in me and made me realise there are lots more places I want to visit! Wanderlust is like an itch - once you scratch it there's no stopping it! Where would you really like to visit and why? Tell me alll about it - I might just find somewhere else to add to my Pinterest! And if you want to follow me on Pinterest, please do.

If you love European travel, why don't you check out this competition? You can win a weekend break for two to Paris and a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Flights and hotel are included. You can enter via Facebook, Twitter or Linkedin. The competition runs until Oct 31st and the winner will be picked on Nov 1st. You have to 16 years old and a UK resident to enter. Travel | Piran Meadows Resort and Spa

Hiya!

When we went to Cornwall recently, we stayed at Piran Meadows resort and spa, a gorgeous home-from-home not far from Newquay.

James's mum and dad found a reduced 4 night break, and seven of us went on a family holiday. James and I shared a caravan with his mum and dad to share the cost, and his brother, our sister in law and our baby niece stayed in one nearby.

The word caravan doesn't do the accommodation justice though, not at all.

The park itself is beautifully landscaped with not a bit of litter to be seen anywhere. I didn't see so much as a discarded chewing gum wrapper the whole time we were there. The caravan is the most luxurious one we'd ever stayed in, and I didn't think that possible after the caravan we stayed in at Easter. As to the cleanliness when we arrived, the only way I can describe it is forensically clean. You would imagine no one had ever stayed there before you. If you pass a staff member on the site, they'll say hello and make conversation, and not the kind of 'Oh, this is my job and I hate it' conversation, but an actual 'How are you? Is everything OK for you?' conversation.

Our caravan had 2 bedrooms and 2 toilet/shower rooms. James and I had the twin room, and the beds and bedding were to die for. We've both never slept so well in our lives. In fact, coming home to our own bed has been such a frustrating experience we're going to email Piran Meadows to ask them which mattresses and bedding they use. I think I only managed to keep up with everyone else on this holiday (after the busy few weeks beforehand) because I was crashing out every night as soon as my head hit the pillow. That NEVER normally happens. I toss and turn for hours each night.

In James's mum and dad's bedroom they had an en-suite and a massive walk in wardrobe, and even in our small bedroom there was ample storage.

Our bathroom

Our bedroom

There were lots of luxurious features like a flat screen in the living room and in the main bedroom, and plenty of plug sockets everywhere. Normally on holiday in a caravan everyone is antsy to get their phones and gadgets charged up, but despite us all being tech-heads who'd taken a minimum of 2-3 gadgets each, we were fine. Not only that, but there is free wifi on the whole park! Hell yeah.

Having 2 showers and toilets was wonderful as well, as there was no morning rush to get everyone ready. There was a full size fridge-freezer in the kitchen and plenty of good quality non-stick pans, not those hideous cheap ones you usually get which get ruined the first time you use them. (If you've ever stayed in a caravan you'll know what I mean because every single caravan I've stayed in thus far (dozens of them over the years) has used the same cheap crap.) There was a fire in the living room which got roasting hot, as well as radiators and a heated towel rail in the bathroom. And luxurious fluffy white towels are already in the caravan - a bath sheet and hand towel each. The beds were already made up, and there was a welcome pack in the kitchen with tea, coffee, biscuits etc. Everything has been thought of.

We only ate onsite once but the food was to die for. SO good. There are lots of facilities - a swimming pool, onsite bar and restaurant, spa and gym, bowling lanes, pool tables, play areas for kids, etc. On some of the more expensive accommodation like the lodges, they have hot tubs on the veranda! Oh my days. There are a couple of things some people may see as drawbacks - there's no evening entertainment, and the onsite shop is tiny. I frankly hate the cheesy evening entertainment that most caravan parks have and didn't miss it at all (I didn't even note the lack of entertainment until James's mum pointed it out) and we always do the shopping at a supermarket on the way to a destination anyway.

Would we go back to Piran Meadows? HELL YES. With bells on. As soon as possible! James and I want to go back next year.

If you're heading to Cornwall and want to stay in a central location in stunning style, then Piran Meadows is for you. It's worth every penny of extra money compared to its competitors - but I don't believe it has any real competitors. Caravan holidays will never be the same now they'll be held up to this standard! I know caravan holidays have a bad rap, but this place is not a caravan park as you know it.

Curvissa Event

Hi lovelies!

On Saturday I went to London to attend an event hosted by Curvissa. The email invite sounded wonderful so I was really excited.

The event was a chance to try out Curvissa's new spring lines and take a modelling workshop held by Curve Project London. This is a long post so grab yourself a cuppa!

Mookie (Anne-Lise) kindly met me from the tube at Parsons Green where the event was held. We were the first to arrive and were greeted by the lovely Sarah from Curvissa who handed us a purple flower garland and a name badge, and gave us a drink in a cute pink glass. After everyone arrived the Curvissa girls gave a quick speech about the day ahead and then the beautiful Saffi from London Curve Project took over and gave us the rundown and then got the rest of her team to introduce themselves to us. It quickly became apparent to me that we were going to spend the day with a group of warm, happy, smiley and professional people and that feeling only increased as the day went on. In fact I have the kind of feel-good vibes you normally have about a wedding or another huge event of that kind. Forgive me if I get a bit 'evangelical' but it really was the best day.

We were soon split into two groups - one to begin catwalk training immediately, and the other to pick outfits and go into hair and make up. Myself, Mookie, Becky and two lovely competition winners were in the group to start training, so we met Les Child, who is a renowned choreographer and a total hoot. My first attempts at walking catwalk-style were very comical and resulted in Les shrieking 'Eyes up! Eyes up!' as I walked around looking at the floor. Les is a tough love mentor (yet hilarious at the same time) and wasn't shy about pointing us in the right direction. When you have a limited time to instil excellence you need short, sharp pointers. We laughed our way right round to lunch time as we practised our sassy walks. We had lunch in the courtyard outside eating finger nibbles, sushi and fruit. We were catered for INCREDIBLY all day. It was a very hot day and we were kept topped up with lots of water and juice, and after lunch when we were feeling the strain from the catwalking there was a cheeky prosecco and some Coke for a caffeine injection.

After lunch it was our turn to pick clothes and go for hair and make up. Becky actually found me the dress I wore, which was from Lovedrobe (via Curvissa.) It looked so nice on me I'll be buying it later on. It was really good to see and feel the clothes and shoes, and I'll be doing a wishlist post in a day or two to show you some of the lovely new items they've brought out. There are some lovely fresh cheery spring lines.

I was really laid back about what I had done with my hair and make up, leaving myself totally in the hands of the professionals. A lovely chap did my make up and he did a really good job. I looked like me, but better. He used the lightest of touches and it reminded me less is more. When it came to my hair I had the benefit of two lovely ladies, one who prepared and curled my hair, and one who finessed it and gave me a lovely 50s style 'doughnut' bun on top of my head and a curled under fringe. I felt like a million dollars! There was such a feeling of support from everyone all day - from the Curvissa ladies who were excited to show us their lovely new ranges, the Curve Project team who were all so enthusiastic about their work, and there were also a lot of compliments shared among us lucky ladies who were being pampered. We were telling each other we looked fab in our outfits, hair and make up. It was so lovely to be surrounded by such genuinely nice people, and it gave me a buzz which still hasn't worn off yet. Every person there was a people person through and through. You can tell when someone likes people and when they're faking it, and everyone was fantastic. It's the kind of environment you can grow in.

You might think learning to walk a catwalk and being watched by a room full of people would be daunting, but it wasn't, not after the first couple of minutes. I knew everybody there wanted good things for us and that made it easy. Before long I was walking with my head held high, holding the gaze of anyone looking at me as I did so. Once we'd all had hair and make up and had chosen an outfit to wear from all the lovely things Curvissa had brought for us we went for photography, both singly and in groups. It was a bit scary at first standing in front of a man with an impressive piece of kit hooked up to a laptop and studio lighting. It was very different to posing in front of my camera on a tripod pulling funny faces and grabbing my boobs, as I usually do! I think I ran the gamut of my usual poses and probably forgot a few more with nerves, but I hope the photos will be OK. They'll be back in a couple of weeks and I will share them EVERYWHERE when I get them - just you try to stop me!

Here are some photos from the day from my Instagram and from Curvissa's account, London Curve Project's and Hollie's IG.

We'd been told not to arrive wearing make up to make things easier for the make up artists, and here's my nervous no make up selfie just after I arrived!

The building where the event was hosted, The Worx is lovely and light and airy. This is the foyer.

A few shots after hair and make up, and in my dress.

How good does my hair look with my new glasses?! 50s ahoy!

After the photography we all walked the catwalk and it was filmed, in fact there were cameras on us all day, not just when we were posing for the photographer. It's something I got used to very quickly as we were all having so much fun. It was lovely to meet bloggers I've met before - Hollie, Becky and Mookie - and it was great to meet Beka, Sally, Gemma, Charley and Nat.

When the event was coming to a close I wanted to go and say thank you and goodbye to everyone, so Mookie and I went to say our farewells. I felt quite sad at this point as I didn't want it to end! We were sent on our way with a lovely goodie bag, some organic juices and a day full of memories.

Thanks to the Curvissa team for the invite and for being so lovely to talk to. Thanks to Saffi and the Curve Project London team for giving me the chance to feel catwalk fabulous. I'll finish with something choreographer Les said. "Life's a catwalk. You've got to razzle dazzle them!"

So, to clarify the images will be coming back in about 2 weeks and I will post them as soon as I get them. I'll be doing a post about the lovely Curvissa goodies within the next couple of days.

Thanks for reading. Have you ever had your hair and make up done professionally? I think I've acquired a taste for it!

A new set of wheels

Hiya!

Last week we bought a wheelie case for me to use when I travel to blog events. My back and shoulders are one of the most painful areas of my body and carrying heavy things around is really not fun. After the Simply Be Gok Wan event my back and shoulder muscles were going into spasm for days afterwards so a small wheelie case was in order to make future jaunts less difficult.

We bought this Go Explore case from Argos for £24.99. It's the right size for hand luggage for our trip to Sweden in June (we checked the size against the airline's measurements - they do vary from airline to airline.) I needed one with 4 wheels so it would glide freely (even sideways) and that means I don't have to put my back into steering it at all. If you're also disabled having a 4 wheeled case makes for virtually effortless gliding.

It's made of ABS plastic, which is light and strong, but it marks terribly easily. The marks you see below are the result of it coming home in the boot and being laid down on the floor for photography. When it's lost more of its colour I'll probably paint it bright pink or smother it in stickers.

So, what was it like to use? Easy breezy! The handle goes up and down really smoothly/quickly and isn't at all stiff. The wheels rotate really easily - so easily in fact that I had to stop it from wandering off on its own on the tube a few times. I had it absolutely rammed to the gills full of stuff but wheeling it about was a pleasure.
  • Size H49, W39, D22cm.
  • Weight 2.7kg.
I'm sure they've got the weight wrong, it feels like it weighs next to nothing to me. Maybe I'm stronger than I think?!

Before I was ill I was so strong I'd carry everything, no matter how heavy. A few years ago we bought a large wheelie bag for our travels when we didn't have a car, but it's far too big for me to use on overnight stays and too much for me to handle on my own anyway. I don't expect this case to last forever, but for the price if I get a year or two out of it I'll be happy.

What do you use for overnighters?

Thanks for reading.

Rye Nature Reserve revisit

Hi!

The weekend before last the hubby and I paid a second visit to Rye Nature Reserve in East Sussex. We went there last year with my mum and step dad but went back on our own so we could do a longer walk. As we left home in the car the rain was torrential and we were starting to think we were crazy to go out for a walk. By the time we arrived in Rye there was no rain at all, and it stayed dry the whole time we were there.

The Nature Reserve lies within a large triangle of land extending south from Rye, along the River Rother, past Rye Harbour to the sea, westward to Winchelsea Beach and northwards along the River Brede.

Wild bunnies
A yellow poppy, which is quite rare apparently.

A wind farm in the background
Least Lettuce and Stinking Hawksbeard, which the bunnies munch.

Least lettuce is a wild lettuce, so no wonder the rabbits love it. Stinking Hawksbeard resembles dandelion. More tempting rabbit chow!

Over there is the beach, which is shingle like the sides of the path.

There were all these thoughtful little paths to the beach.

I was fascinated, as you can tell!

Looking in the opposite direction (with the sea at our back) and back to the start of our walk.

It's a great walk if you can't do hills, as it's all flat.

These heavy chains were near the beach, perhaps to secure a fishing boat.

Smiley hubby
It was terribly grey and overcast, which is why there aren't any panoramic shots of the scenery. I'm sure we're all sick of the greyness we've been having this 'summer', so I didn't feel the need to share any grey views with you :)

We did a 3 mile walk then stopped off for fish and chips, which went down a treat. There's nothing like tiring yourself out in the fresh air then having a well-needed sit down and a good feed.

Where's your favourite place to walk?
Or do you prefer to exercise indoors?

I prefer exercising indoors as my Fibromyalgia means walking for any distance really hurts my joints, but it's more than worth the pain to be outside in nature, especially when the sun shines. According to the weather reports, there's going to be some sunny weather soon. YAY!

Thursday Photos - the last of Cornwall photos

Hi all.

I realised a day or two ago I hadn't posted the end of my Cornwall photos. There are only a few left, so it'd be rude not to.

Here's one of me. There aren't that many full length photos of me around!

The rest of the holiday photos were taken in Charlestown, which is just lovely.

How good a view those houses must have!

Everywhere had bunting up, everywhere we went. I love bunting!

Here's a gif of me swimming in the pool.

Here are some photos from some make up I did last month and didn't post. Green and a smidge of gold. I can't remember exactly what I used, but I *think* the green is from a Vivo Trio and the gold is from the first Naked Palette.

I hope you're having a grand week.
