Taking Shape Northern Lights dress review*

Hello lovelies!

Welcome to my first outfit post of 2014!

I have a lovely dress from Taking Shape to show you today. They got in touch just before Christmas and offered to send me a couple of pieces to show you. I got to pick which items I'd receive, so obviously the chances are I will at least like, if not love them.

The dress is a heavyweight crinkle knit comprising of 92% polyester and 8% elastane. I picked it because red, black and white is one of my favourite colour combinations and I'm a fan of abstract prints.

A close up of the fabric

Things I like:
  • the material - crinkle fabric means no need to iron and it's lovely and warm
  • the pattern
  • the length - it comes to just under my knees, even at the back (my big bum normally makes dresses much shorter at the back.)
  • the drape around the hips which can be used as pockets
  • the oversize fit - I picked an XXL and it was ample on me

Things I don't like so much:
  • the high neckline - I'd have preferred it to be an inch or two lower to give a tiny hint of cleavage
  • the seam in the fabric under the bust - to be flattering on me it would've needed to be an inch or so lower, so as not to bisect my boobs. If the seam was lower and nipped in there it would've given me a bit more shape

I have E cup boobs so the issue with the boobs being cut across by the seam might not affect someone with a smaller bust than me. I'm a 26/28 and I think this dress would comfortably fit someone of a size 30/32 if they carry weight in a similar way to me - I'm a pear. There's ample room for belly and bum in this dress. I feel Taking Shape are going to be great for ladies looking for classy clothes, and a destination store for occasion wear. As I said in my introduction post to Taking Shape, the clothes are investment pieces rather than fast, throwaway fashion. I'll be reviewing the second piece within the next few days.
